Grades 1 - 8 use Type
To Learn each week for a portion
of their computer class time - to build and improve their typing skills
since this is the foundation of all their other computer user skills
development.
We post our Class Typing Scores
at the Computer Lab each week, usually on friday afternoons after the last
class of the day. Stop by and view your child's progress!
First
Trimester Goal :
All students
in grades 3 - 8 should be finished with Lesson 7
Second
Trimester Goal :
All students
in grades 3 - 8 should be finished with Lesson 14
Final
Trimester Goal :
All students
in grades 3 - 8 should be finished with Lesson 21
If your child finishes all 21
lessons of their grade level Typing lessons ahead of time, we promote them
in the Typing program to the next grade level of difficulty. Typing
is a very popular program at St. Justin because the children can view their
progress every day - note that the younger grades often set their sites
on scoring higher than the older grades!
Practicing at home
Even if you do not have the
Type to Learn software at home (see links below) you can still aid your
child's skill development by having them practice typing a full page every
day from a favorite book. Anyone who types consistently for 15 minutes
per day every day, will improve dramatically over those who never type
outside of the scheduled class time.
Something to think about.....
Some children suggest that because
they are typing on AIM or other instant messaging programs this helps them.....
Not So! Using the "Instant Messenger" variety of "2-finger typing"
and the slang language typically used in text messaging, without spelling
accurately or using proper grammar does not really aid their typing skills
development. It fosters habits that are hard to break later when they must
be able to quickly type a term-paper or multi-paged report.
