Student Formation Newsletter: October

As September ends, I want to honor, acknowledge, and celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month. I would like to invite you to explore community led activities with your family that celebrate the many contributions of this community.

Mexican Heritage Plaza: School of Arts & Culture

- Avenida de Altares (Avenue of Altars): Sat. Oct 28, 2023; 5:30 PM – 11:00 PM. A free cultural event celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is an immersive experience centering a curated alter walk honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed. This includes Day of the Dead themed face painting, local artisans, and a picturesque cemetery installation.

- Mosaic Festival: Sat, Sep 30, 2023; 3:00 PM – Sun, Oct 1, 2023, at 9:00 PM. Venture into the world of vibrant cultures, each rooted in the heart of Silicon Valley.

- Mercadito: Wed. Oct 4, 2023; 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. The Mercadito Food Distribution Program creatively addresses food insecurity in partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

- “La Muerte Baila”: Th, Oct 12, 2023 8:00 AM – Sun, Oct 22, 203 at 9:30 PM. Teatro Vision will premiere “La Muerte Baila” theater production.

Youth Science Institute: The Youth Science Institute (YSI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to inspire enthusiasm for science and a love of learning.” They offer School and Group Programs, Summer Science Camps, weekend Science Safaris, and annual community events. Many of our programs include live animals and nature hikes. In the month of October there are fun events taking place including:

- Critter Search at Sanborn: Oct. 7 , 2023; 10:30-12 PM. Recommended ages: 7-12 years old.
Location: 16055 Sanborn Road Saratoga, CA 95070.
Cost: Free.

- Fall Crafts at Vasona: Oct. 28, 2023; 10:30 AM-12 PM. Recommended ages: 4-12 years old. A fun time making fall-themed crafts! You can make some animals out of pine cones, leaf prints, and seed mosaics! Decorate your home for the season!
Location: Vasona Park, 333 Blossom Hill Rd, Los Gatos, CA 95032.
Cost: $25 per person.

Finally, I want to remind you of our upcoming Internet Safety event hosted in partnership with Santa Clara Police Department and The Silicon Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force on Oct 18, 2023 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. This training was created to interactively engage parents in the use of Social Media and Technology. This is a parent only event. You will learn:

- How to set up Parental Controls.
- Navigate Social Media usage.
- Understand key concepts to keep children safe from online predators.
- Help parents have conversations with their children about parental controls and safety.
